Temporary Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook addresses: what’s real

By Riley Marsh ·

Only Google can create @gmail.com addresses. Many “Gmail generators” just reuse an existing account. Here’s what they do, and what works better for each provider.

Can we give you a Gmail address?

No. Our temporary addresses use our own domains. We can’t create addresses at Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or Hotmail, because each of those domains belongs to its provider. The same is true of any independent temp mail service.

What “Gmail generators” usually do

Gmail ignores dots in personal addresses and delivers tagged addresses to the same inbox, so j.ohnsmith@gmail.com and johnsmith+shop@gmail.com both reach johnsmith@gmail.com. A tool can use those rules to turn one account into thousands of addresses that look new. Whoever runs that account can receive what’s sent to all of them.

Lists of “free Gmail accounts with passwords” are worse. Those accounts are often stolen, so don’t use them.

Gmail: tags on your own address

If you just want to sort or trace mail, add a tag to your own address. It’s free, and the mail stays in your inbox. It doesn’t hide your real address, though, as our guide to Gmail plus addressing explains.

Yahoo: disposable addresses

Yahoo’s help pages describe disposable addresses, created under Settings and Mailboxes. They deliver to your main Yahoo inbox, and you can delete them later. Availability and limits vary by region and plan, so if you don’t see the option, your account may not have it.

Outlook and Hotmail: aliases

A Microsoft account can have email aliases: extra addresses that share your inbox, and that you can remove later. Microsoft limits how many you can add, so check its support pages for the current number. Hotmail accounts are managed the same way, through Outlook.com.

Which should you use?

Questions

Is a temporary Gmail address safe for verification codes?

Not if it comes from a generator or a shared account, because someone else may be able to read the code. Use an inbox only you can open.

Why do some sites accept Gmail but block temp mail?

Many sites keep lists of temporary email domains and block them, while Gmail is too widely used to block. See why websites block temporary email for more.

Do you offer temporary Yahoo or Hotmail addresses?

No. We only offer random addresses on our own domains.
