Temp mail vs temporary phone numbers

By Riley Marsh ·

Temporary email receives email, not text messages. If a site sends its code by SMS, you need a phone number, and the free “receive SMS online” sites come with real risks.

Can temp mail receive SMS codes?

No. Email and text messages travel over completely different systems. TempMailyo only receives email, so a code sent to a phone number will never show up here.

Some sites let you choose. If the sign-up page offers “use email instead”, a temporary address can work.

How free SMS websites work

Websites that let you receive SMS online show a list of phone numbers and display every text message those numbers receive. Anyone who visits the page sees the same messages.

Why they are risky

A public phone number is worse than a public temp inbox, because a phone number is often used to recover an account long after sign-up.

If a site insists on a phone number

Ask whether the account is worth giving a number to. If it is, use your own. If you only want to look around, check whether the site works without an account at all. Using phone numbers to get around one-account-per-person limits breaks most sites’ rules.
